The San Francisco 49ers were expected to be a Super Bowl contender this season.
Unfortunately, injuries have prevented that from happening.
Now, they’re on the outside looking in and unlikely to make the playoffs.
Notably, that has rubbed Jerry Rice the wrong way.
In a recent interview for The Morning Roast, the legendary wide receiver claimed that HC Kyle Shanahan needed to “reinvent himself” (via 95.7 The Game):
“I think [Kyle Shanahan]’s got to reinvent himself. If defensive coordinators catch up to you, they’re going to take away the strength of your offense…Just let these playmakers go play,” he said.

He has a valid point.
For years, Shanahan has been considered one of the best head coaches in the game.
He is praised for his bright, offensive mind.
While all of that might be true, he also has a long history of shortcomings, and he’s often struggled to make in-game adjustments in key moments.
Some believe the Niners must hit the drawing board and blow up their roster.
There’s a strong case to be made for that.
They’re not getting any younger, and most of their best players have struggled with injuries for most of their careers.
With Brock Purdy reportedly looking to get top-dollar in his next contract, there might not be enough cash to go around for everybody else.
Needless to say, that’s also going to be a massive challenge for coach Shanahan.
We’ve already seen how well he fares when he has an offensive juggernaut and a myriad of talent at his disposal, but he’ll have to prove to be as good when things don’t go his way, and he’s not given that kind of talent.
