The San Francisco 49ers have a big decision to make in the offseason.
Brock Purdy is due for a contract extension, and reports claim he’s not settling for anything less than top dollar.
That doesn’t bode well for their finances.
Moreover, given how he’s played this season, there are legitimate reasons to be concerned.
At least, that’s how one league executive feels.
Talking to The Athletic’s Mike Sando, the unnamed executive talked about Purdy’s glaring physical limitations:
“The new contract for Purdy (in the offseason) was a slam dunk for me until Thursday night,” an exec from another team said. “What I saw was a guy who was so limited physically that, I’m not saying I don’t want him, it’s just the first time I’ve said, ‘Hmmm, he can’t make those throws.’”
Purdy silenced most of the critics last season.
He led the league in multiple categories and went all the way to the Super Bowl.
He was also huge in two comeback wins in the playoffs.
Nevertheless, there have always been doubts about his ability to take care of business when he doesn’t have everything going on for him or all of his stars by his side.
That was evident again this season.
The Niners have been stung by the injury bug more than most teams in the league this season.
Purdy could’ve still silenced the critics if he had played well in the losses, but that hasn’t always been the case.
The Niners have an aging and injury-prone roster that’s gotten way too expensive, and committing a lot of money to their quarterback will only hinder their ability to keep competing for years to come.
Simply put, they will have to choose whether to sign him to a big-money deal and lose some of their stars or let him walk and try to replace him in free agency or via the NFL Draft.
