The debate over the term “world champions” continues throughout the NBA and the rest of the globe.
For weeks now, we have heard many opinions about whether that phrase is appropriate for the team that wins the NBA Finals.
And now we have another player who is chipping in with his two cents: Andreas Obst of Germany.
Obst definitely doesn’t believe the NBA champions should be considered “world champions” and he let his opinion be known to Eurohoops, via Legion Hoops:
“In the NBA, they’ve always had this attitude that they’re the best at something. They can call themselves whatever they want, the bottom line doesn’t change. We are the World Champions.”

On one hand, he is absolutely right.
The German team just won the FIBA Basketball World Cup.
They made their way through a bunch of other international teams, from America and far beyond.
Since they got past them all, there is no denying that they are champions of the world.
At the same time, that doesn’t mean that the NBA is going to stop using that wording back in the United States.
There is a very good chance that when the Finals roll around, they will still call the victorious team the “world champions.”
That is the way that it’s always been done and it is probably the way it’ll keep being done.
But there is also little doubt that the debate about this is going to continue.
As the years go on, only more international stars are going to become huge players in the game.
And the scope of basketball will continue to widen, with it experiencing more popularity in every corner of the world.
We definitely haven’t heard the last of these opinions.
