The San Francisco 49ers turned a lot of heads in the 2021 NFL Draft.
They selected Trey Lance with the No. 3 pick.
He was a highly-debated prospect, as many believed he didn’t have the collegiate experience to make it in the league.
After sitting for the majority of his rookie campaign, Lance was slated to be the 49ers’ starter in 2022 before falling to injury.
He started in their first preseason game which left a bad taste in Dan Orlovsky’s mouth.
In a segment of ‘Get Up’ on ESPN, Orlovsky proclaimed, “I don’t think Trey Lance can play in Kyle Shanahan’s offense.”

He added, “I’ve seen enough.”
On paper, Lance’s stats weren’t awful in this game.
He went 10-15 on his passing attempts, throwing for 112 yards and a touchdown.
However, he was sacked four times during this contest, including two of the first three plays of the game.
This has been used as a negative about Lance, demonstrating that he isn’t able to get out of the pocket.
He might continue to be on a short leash with the 49ers, even though he had high draft capital.
Brock Purdy continues to impress during training camp, even after his return from UCL surgery.
There is said to be a quarterback competition in San Francisco, but Purdy hasn’t seen the field in the preseason.
This could be Shanahan’s way of tipping his hand, indicating Purdy is the starter.
With less than a month to go until the season starts, the 49ers have a lot of decisions to make.
