On Wednesday afternoon, Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Madison Bumgarner was ejected after the first inning, following a bizarre interaction with umpire Dan Bellino.
The video in which Bellino checks Bumgarner for foreign substances has gone viral.
It’s just a weird scene: Bellino touches Bumgarner’s hand while looking into his eyes for a few seconds.
The pitcher doesn’t even notice this, until he lifts his look.
After the ejection, Bumgarner had to be restrained by teammates, coaches, and his manager Torey Lovullo.
He swore, he yelled, and he made sure he wasn’t happy about Bellino’s decision.
The D-Backs Twitter account had some fun with the clip.
Arizona Swept Miami After The First Inning Controversy
On Wednesday afternoon, after the game, they posted the clip in which the umpire is checking Bumgarner’s hand with this caption: “In your future…I see…a sweep.”

It’s funny because it actually looks like the umpire is reading the pitcher’s hand.
But far from it: he was playing police officer, and perhaps the game went a bit out of hand, so to speak.
At least the Diamondbacks won yesterday’s game, and in spectacular fashion, too: down 7-6 in the ninth inning, Pavin Smith hit a two-run blast that turned the score around against Miami Marlins’ closer Anthony Bender.
The victory meant that the D-Backs swept the Marlins in Miami, after taking Monday and Tuesday’s games with the same score, 5-4.
Arizona is now surprisingly 13-13 to open the season, and while they are widely expected to be one of the last two clubs in the NL West division, at least they are looking much, much better than they did in 2021.
