The Las Vegas Raiders extended Derek Carr‘s residency by giving him a three-year extension worth $121.5 million.
The 31-year-old quarterback is coming off a solid 2021 season wherein he had 4,803 passing yards and 23 touchdowns.
Las Vegas also made the playoffs but lost in the Wild Card Round to the Cincinnati Bengals.
But as the Raiders move forward with Carr and new head coach Josh McDaniels, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero pointed out the exclusive club that Carr joined.
Derek Carr's $40.5 million new-money average on his new three-year extension with the #Raiders puts him 5th among QBs and makes him the 7th member of the $40M+ club, joining Aaron Rodgers, Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Matthew Stafford and Dak Prescott.

Pelissero tweeted, “Derek Carr’s $40.5 million new-money average on his new three-year extension with the #Raiders puts him 5th among QBs and makes him the 7th member of the $40M+ club, joining Aaron Rodgers, Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Matthew Stafford, and Dak Prescott.”
Coincidentally, Pelissero listed the other play-callers in the club in descending order.
Prescott and Stafford both have four-year, $160 million contracts with the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Rams, respectively.
Allen signed a six-year, $258 million extension, giving him an annual average value of $43 million.
Meanwhile, Mahomes made news after agreeing to a ten-year, $450 million mega-deal.
On the other hand, Watson’s fully-guaranteed five-year, $230 million deal could set a trend in the NFL.
Finally, the reigning MVP’s three-year, $150 million contract makes him the highest-paid player in the league.
More Members Of The $40 Million Club Coming Soon
Quarterback is the most critical position in today’s game, giving them the ability to command escalating salaries.
Therefore, expect that exclusive club to make room for more members because $40 million is the base value for a franchise play-caller.
Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens can command a salary equal to or better than Carr’s deal.
After all, he has been a league MVP.
Likewise, Kyler Murray will make Carr’s contract a reference once he negotiates an extension with the Arizona Cardinals.
