You cannot win in the National Football League unless you have a solid defense; that’s just a fact.
Of course, this is a quarterback’s league, and the new rules always favor the offense.
However, making timely defensive adjustments can shut down even the greatest offense in the world.
If you don’t take our word for it, just ask former NFL player-turned-analyst Dan Orlovsky, who raved about how the defensive coordinators from all winning teams excelled at their jobs during the weekend.
My biggest takeaway from this weekend
The defensive coordinator’s for all 4 winning teams were stars
-Gannon adjusted so well
-Anarumo is as good as any defensive mind in NFL
-Demeco is brilliant
-Spags’ pressures were perfectly timed— Dan Orlovsky (@danorlovsky7) January 23, 2023
Orlovsky pointed out how Jonathan Gannon adjusted so well between the last time the Philadelphia Eagles faced the New York Giants.
They annihilated the G-Men’s offense and made Daniel Jones look like the same borderline disaster he was before Brian Daboll’s arrival in New York.
Orlovsky also praised Cincinnati Bengals DC Lou Anarumo, who’s rarely mentioned among the league’s finest defensive minds, yet he’s done an outstanding job this season.
Limiting Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills offense to just 10 points deserves plenty of credit, that’s for sure.
Orlovsky then talked about DeMeco Ryans, using just one word to describe him: Brilliant.
Really, there’s not much to say about Ryans that we haven’t heard already, and he deserves a chance to be a head coach in this league.
Last but not least, Orlovsky praised Steve Spagnuolo for how his defense put a lot of pressure on Trevor Lawrence on every snap.
Now, all four of these guys will have their toughest challenge of the season ahead, so it’ll be interesting to see who wins the chess match.
