The Dallas Cowboys had to make an important roster adjustment before their season opener after losing left tackle Tyron Smith.
Smith was placed on injured reserve after suffering a torn hamstring in practice.
However, the bigger issue is that Smith has missed some time over the past six seasons due to injuries.
His 2020 injury was abruptly ended by a neck injury that required surgery.
A year later, various injuries led him to miss six games.
Rookie Tyler Smith will likely take his place as starting left tackle.
But the Cowboys feel their depth chart at the position is insufficient.
That’s why they brought in a player with a resume as impressive as the veteran Smith.
Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said LT Jason Peters already has "made us better. …He's done an excellent job communicating with Tyler" Smith and other young linemen. "It's been a really good fit for the room."

Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News tweeted, “Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said LT Jason Peters already has ‘made us better. …He’s done an excellent job communicating with Tyler Smith and other young linemen. It’s been a really good fit for the room.'”
The Cowboys signed the 40-year-old tackle to their practice squad five days ago.
Given that he is a veteran, he could earn somewhere between $15,400 to $19,900 weekly.
He could also be called up to the active roster a maximum of three times throughout the season.
It’s nice to have a proven player as insurance if Smith, Josh Ball, and Matt Waletzko can’t hold the fort at left tackle.
Peters’ Credentials
The former Arkansas standout went undrafted in the 2004 NFL Draft.
Since then, he has played for the Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, and Philadelphia Eagles.
He won Super Bowl LII with the Eagles and is a member of the league’s 2010s All-Decade Team.
Peters is a two-time First-Team All-Pro, a four-time Second-Team All-Pro, and a nine-time Pro Bowler.
He has played 228 games and has a receiving touchdown.
