Super Bowl LIX was expected to be a close game, and plenty of people expected the Kansas City Chiefs to find a way to win.
But instead of the Chiefs earning an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl championship, the Eagles pecked their faces off in a 40-22 blowout victory, and the game wasn’t as close as that final score may suggest.
It was a stunning loss for a team that had found a way to win all season, especially in close games, and the Chiefs posted a message to their fans thanking them for their support.
“Not the ending we hoped for, but we wouldn’t want to go on this journey with anyone else. Thank you for being the best fans in the world Chiefs Kingdom,” the Chiefs wrote on X.

The first quarter wasn’t bad for Kansas City, as it ended with the team down 7-0, but the Eagles added a field goal in the second quarter, and when Cooper DeJean had a pick-six to put the lead at 17-0, it started to become clear that it wasn’t Kansas City’s night.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was uncharacteristically shaky. Although he completed 21 of 32 pass attempts for 257 yards and three touchdowns, he threw two interceptions and was sacked six times.
All three of his touchdown passes came after the Eagles had built a 34-0 lead.
The good news for the Chiefs is that they could be better next season even if they make few moves this offseason.
Wide receiver Rashee Rice, who had a nice rookie season in 2023, is expected back from a knee injury that ended this season, and Xavier Worthy, the rookie wideout who had eight catches, 157 yards and two touchdowns in this Super Bowl, will have a full year under his belt.
It shouldn’t be much of a stretch to imagine the Chiefs holding the Vince Lombardi Trophy again at Super Bowl LX.
