As the rest of the 2023 season plays out, it remains clear that this year’s field of postseason contestants will not consist of the St. Louis Cardinals.
With September right around the corner, the Cardinals are 56-72 on the season and well out of postseason contention.
In fact, their record is the second-worst in the National League.
Things have gone so poorly in fact that the team chose to be deadline sellers and give young players a chance to prove themselves.
On a recent Cardinals podcast, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch discussed how poorly things have gone and what has become of the team.

Goold mentioned how with the Cardinals out of contention, the rest of the season has turned into an extended spring training period.
This is unlike anything the Cardinals have experienced in several years.
Goold talked about how Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado play with the desire to win, but that all around them, things continue to deteriorate.
He notes how the Cardinals don’t want to bail on the season and tank for a high draft pick.
However, Goold mentioned that they do want to let some of their young players try to establish themselves and show what they can do so as to potentially factor into their plans for 2024.
The question remains whether or not the Cardinals are prepared to stomach the losing that comes with this.
The team has not finished below .500 since 2007 and are on pace to have their first losing season since then.
