When the San Francisco 49ers named Brock Purdy as their starter for the 2023 season, it didn’t come as a surprise to many.
Purdy exceeded any sort of expectations when he took over the offense toward the end of the 2022 campaign as he managed to lead the 49ers all the way to the NFC Championship Game.
Because of his performance, Purdy was rightfully named the No. 1 quarterback on the depth chart though it pushed Trey Lance all the way down to the third-string.
Sam Darnold did enough in training camp to earn the backup role, leaving San Francisco almost no choice but to trade Lance.
They eventually settled on a fourth-round pick from the Dallas Cowboys, thus officially moving on from the disappointing situation.
While Purdy is surely happy to be a starter, he also expressed how much he enjoyed having Lance as a teammate via 95.7 The Game.
“I love Trey,” Purdy said. “Everything he’s done for this organization and obviously for myself. I can’t say how thankful I am to have played & been a teammate with Trey.”

Purdy seemed to truly cherish having Lance alongside him as the two worked together in the 49ers quarterback room.
By all accounts, Lance is a great teammate and individual who should find more opportunities to compete for a role in Dallas.
For San Francisco, they’ll have to live with the fact that they sunk so many resources into trading up for Lance though they did the right thing by not dragging things out any longer.
