During the offseason, one of the biggest questions the San Francisco 49ers had to answer was who would start at quarterback for the 2023 season.
Trey Lance was named the starter for the 2022 campaign, but he only managed to appear in two games before suffering an ankle injury that forced him to miss the rest of the season.
Jimmy Garoppolo took back the starting role, but he also endured a season-ending foot injury that paved the way for Brock Purdy to assume control of the offense.
Purdy was a revelation as he looked comfortable leading the 49ers all the way to the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Some thought that Kyle Shanahan would go back to Lance in order to give him an opportunity to prove himself, but he and the team decided to go with Purdy instead.
As a result, San Francisco traded Lance to the Dallas Cowboys and general manager John Lynch revealed that the young quarterback was happy about the move via 95.7 The Game.
“Kyle and I when we broke the news to him today saw him light up a little bit,” Lynch said.

Lynch said that the only way for Lance to improve was to get reps and he’ll have more of an opportunity with the Cowboys where he is competing against Cooper Rush for the backup role.
It’s a disappointing end for Lance who some considered to be the future face of the franchise, but things don’t always work out for highly-drafted prospects in the NFL.
