The San Francisco 49ers came into the 2024 NFL season as the favorites to win the Super Bowl.
While their season hasn’t exactly gone according to plan, they do still have one of the best rosters in the league, having dominant players on both sides of the ball.
They’ve been able to afford a roster with premium players for the past three years with Brock Purdy still on his rookie deal.
This is usually a time for teams to load up on both sides of the ball, taking advantage of the fact that their rookie doesn’t make much, relatively speaking.
While that might have been true for the 49ers over the past few seasons, the rubber is about to meet the road.
Purdy was seemingly seeking a contract extension in the offseason, and while a deal didn’t get done ahead of the 2024 season, the 49ers are expected to make him an offer after this year is over.
The former “Mr. Irrelevant” has played far above expectations to this point, and led the 49ers to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons, which included a Super Bowl appearance.
Despite his success, in a recent segment of “First Things First” on FS1, Nick Wright indicated that it might not be in the 49ers’ best interest to sign Purdy after all.
“If you pay this player, you are not going to be abel to have the talent around him that he needs to look great, so I would not pay this player,” Wright said.

Wright indicated that Purdy has only played this well due to the team around him, and his talent might fade when they can’t afford to pay everyone.
It will be interesting to see how the 49ers proceed in the offseason, especially if they don’t make the playoffs or have an early exit.
