Most people thought the Philadelphia 76ers and Quentin Grimes were going to work out a new deal to bring him back to the team in 2025-26, but that hasn’t happened yet.
Instead, no one knows where Grimes stands, and his future with the Sixers is completely up in the air.
Keith Smith dug into the numbers and saw where the current situation leaves Philadelphia.
Without Grimes, the 76ers are $1.7 million under the tax, $9.8 million under the first apron, and $21.7 million under the second apron.
If he takes the $8.7 qualifying offer they have put on the table, Grimes will push Philadelphia into the tax, and no one is sure if they want that.
Without Quentin Grimes in the fold, the 76ers are:
$1.7M under the tax
$9.8M under the first apron
$21.7M under the second apronGrimes on the $8.7M qualifying offer or a new deal will put Philadelphia in the tax. The real question: Are they ok going well over the first apron?

The 76ers might be better off if Grimes says no to this deal and just lets things stand.
They have hardly gotten to know him during his 28 games with the team, but during that time, he averaged 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists.
Grimes looked like someone who could get better and better for Philadelphia and perhaps be a part of their long-term future.
But if the numbers don’t work for the 76ers, they will let him go.
They need to be careful about how they spend their money, because they don’t know what the future holds for them, such as Joel Embiid, Paul George, and others.
On paper, this should be one of the best teams in the East, but they were far from that last season.
If this upcoming year is another disappointment, the Sixers will contemplate changing up their roster, and that will require some cash.
They are definitely thinking of that as they consider what is next for Grimes and their financial situation.
