It’s been a long while since we last saw the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals.
And even though one could argue that they weren’t a legit championship contender this season, Luka Doncic’s presence made us think that they weren’t that far off.
The Mavs traded for Kyrie Irving to try and send a message that they want to compete right now.
However, the move backfired drastically and only cost them a postseason berth this season.
Nonetheless, Craig Carton thinks the players shouldn’t be blamed for the team’s underachievement.
If anything, the fault should fall on Jason Kidd’s shoulders, going as far as to say that they should fire him because of how iso-heavy their offense was down the stretch.

To be fair, Kidd left a lot to be desired during his first two stints as a coach with the Milwaukee Bucks and Brooklyn Nets.
But he’s fared much better since then and the Mavs actually had a pretty solid defense last season.
Doncic and Irving need more time together to figure things out and develop rapport on the court, and iso-ball won’t do a lot to help in that regard.
But the Mavs would make a terrible mistake by firing Kidd at this point, as the only thing that could salvage this duo — besides surrounding them with actual defenders — is continuity.
Also, judging by Mark Cuban’s words, it doesn’t seem like Kidd’s work is in jeopardy at the moment.NEXT: Mark Cuban Has A Strong Belief About Luka Doncic
