Despite the question of who will start at quarterback for them, the San Francisco 49ers are in outstanding shape these days.
They’re chock full of talent on both sides of the football, and their dominant defense has room for improvement thanks to the addition of defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, who had 11 sacks, 16 QB hits, and 10 tackles for loss last year.
Even better, despite giving Hargrave a lucrative contract, they still have a decent amount of salary cap space, as The Athletic’s David Lombardi pointed out.
49ers' salary-cap check-in:
-$10.7m of 2023 room currently
-Pending Nick Bosa extension can increase that
-Unused cap room will carry over to 2024
-$273m of 2024 liabilities across 56 players
-2024 cap TBD, but 2023 number was about $225m
-That explains necessary SF prudence— David Lombardi (@LombardiHimself) May 29, 2023
The pending salary issue for San Francisco is giving star defensive end Nick Bosa a contract extension to keep him in the Bay for years to come.
He was named the Defensive Player of the Year for 2022 after posting a league-high 18.5 sacks, plus 48 QB hits and 19 tackles for loss.
Bosa is an absolute pass-rushing monster, and he is quite possibly the biggest factor in the Niners’ defensive dominance.
In 2024, the contract extensions they gave All-Pro middle linebacker Fred Warner and wide receiver Deebo Samuel will also take effect.
Not too long from now, they will find themselves in a situation where they will likely need to supply extensions to wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who has emerged as a stud, as well as possibly safety Talanoa Hufanga, who had an outstanding breakout campaign in 2022.
But for now, the 49ers are focused on the quest for their sixth Super Bowl championship.
They have lost in their last two appearances in the big game and haven’t taken home the world championship since the 1994 season.
