The San Francisco 49ers are coming off a season in which the team made it to the NFC Championship Game even though they lost two quarterbacks throughout the regular season.
After losing Trey Lance to a foot injury earlier in the season, veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo took over until he went down with an injury of his own, paving the way for rookie Brock Purdy to get his chance to shine under center for San Francisco.
Although it seemed like the season was over with Lance or Garoppolo under center, Purdy proved to be a better option than both, as he didn’t lose a game until he suffered an injury in the NFC Championship Game.
Purdy was so impressive during his time as the team’s starter that he’ll likely remain the starter for the foreseeable future, but he has to get back healthy first, which appears to be right around the corner, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport via The Pat McAfee Show.

All signs seemed to point to the 49ers going with Lance or veteran newcomer Sam Darnold in Week 1, but if Rapoport’s report is accurate, San Francisco can breathe a sigh of relief with Purdy being their guy to start the 2023 campaign.
If Purdy does return healthy and ready for Week 1, it’ll be an ideal start for the 49ers, with Lance and Darnold being insurance policies behind the new face of the franchise.
In his five regular-season games, Purdy threw for 1,374 yards, 13 touchdowns, and four interceptions.
Purdy followed that impressive regular-season performance up with some solid numbers in three playoff games, as he threw for 569 yards and no interceptions before going down with an injury.
