For the second straight offseason, there is a cloud of uncertainty surrounding the San Francisco 49ers and their quarterback situation.
For the sixth straight season, Jimmy Garoppolo spent at least part of the schedule as their starter under center, but according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, that won’t be the case in 2023.

Garoppolo initially came to San Francisco in 2017 via a midseason trade with the New England Patriots at a time when it was in the third year of a rebuilding process.
The franchise had just hired Shanahan, as well as general manager John Lynch in an organizational overhaul, and Garoppolo would make sure that the rebuilding process wouldn’t last much longer.
He led the team to a five-game winning streak to end the season, and just two years later, it was back in the Super Bowl.
But afterward, there was reportedly a growing feeling inside the organization that perhaps Garoppolo wasn’t a championship QB, which led to it trading up to be able to take Trey Lance in the 2021 NFL Draft.
After Lance and Garoppolo got injured this season, rookie Brock Purdy was forced to step in, and he did an admirable job, leading many to think he would be the 49ers’ next true franchise QB.
If the Niners did want to keep Garoppolo, either as a backup or a starter, it would be expensive, as he is expected to be one of the more sought-after signal-callers on the free-agent market.
San Francisco needs to give pass rusher Nick Bosa a contract extension, and it has already committed lots of money to star wide receiver Deebo Samuel.
