It’s no secret that the San Francisco 49ers are actively trading quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
After seeing his performance during the 2021 NFL playoffs, the team knew that it was time to move on from him.
They are handing the keys to Trey Lance because there’s no sense putting him on the bench again after trading up to draft him.
But Garoppolo’s upcoming shoulder surgery might put a roadblock to what could have been a smooth transaction between the Niners and a team that would like to have him.
That said, NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo shared the comments of 49ers general manager John Lynch regarding Garoppolo’s status.
Says he doesn’t like saying “minor” with surgery but that’s how he’d designate it. Capsule issue. Decision for surgery made in the last few days.
“He’s gonna be fine. We’re so fond of Jimmy. That situation is active and fluid. A lot of teams have interest in him.” https://t.co/4mc4y7eZPa

Garafolo also quoted a tweet from colleague James Palmer which says, “John Lynch just said on @gmfb they didn’t know and Jimmy didn’t know at the end of the season that he would need this shoulder surgery. Tried to rehab and it ended up being a situation where the surgery was the best option.”
Did The Team Hide The Injury?
If that’s the case, then the injury could have been lingering for so long.
The 49ers can say what they want about Garoppolo still getting a lot of interest from other teams.
But the terms “quarterback” and “shoulder surgery” will always bring out the red flags.
Those teams that would like to trade for Garoppolo would have to step back and monitor what happens after the surgery is over.
They’d like to see him fully recovered first before returning to the negotiating table.
