There’s already an agreement between the San Francisco 49ers and Jimmy Garoppolo that they will find a trade partner for the quarterback.
Both sides know that it is Trey Lance‘s time to take over the team’s reins, making Garoppolo an expensive backup.
The veteran play-caller could attract some interest given how he did enough to lead the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game.
Say what you want about his numbers but he can win games.
That said, other teams looking for a quarterback might explore the possibility of acquiring him as a bridge player for one or two seasons.
But even that scenario looks grim due to a recent update shared by ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter.
49ers’ QB Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to soon undergo shoulder surgery that would sideline him until this summer, sources tell ESPN. It is not expected to impact his trade status and Garoppolo still is likely to be traded this month, per sources.

Schefter tweeted, “49ers’ QB Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to soon undergo shoulder surgery that would sideline him until this summer, sources tell ESPN. It is not expected to impact his trade status and Garoppolo still is likely to be traded this month, per sources.”
It’s unsure how many teams have a legitimate interest in Garoppolo.
Unfortunately, the surgery might cause these franchises to think twice unless there’s no other option left.
Will Garoppolo Get Traded Soon?
The 49ers hope that a deal for Garoppolo will be in place soon, as Schefter predicted.
After all, the former Eastern Illinois standout has proven that he can come back from injury.
Still, teams will temporarily raise the red flag on him until they see him going through the motions again.
That said, the timetable for trade might be pushed back depending on how soon can he recover.
Despite the surgery and all, it’s clear that Garoppolo has played his last game for San Francisco.
