The New York Yankees signed left-hander Carlos Rodon to a six-year, $162 million contract in the offseason to be the “1B” to Gerrit Cole’s “1A”.
Unfortunately, he has been exclusively “IL”, as in “injured list”, for the whole season to this point.
In spring training, he reported a mild forearm strain that kept him out of action for weeks.
When he finally overcame that, an annoying back issue appeared and has prevented him from taking the mound.
There is no back pain: just discomfort or how the team calls it, “stiffness”.
No one has been able to spot what the problem is with Rodon’s back, but it has been the issue in recent weeks, not his arm.
“The strange part about the Carlos Rodón situation is that he is feeling no pain, just stiffness in his back. His elbow and shoulder feel fine. He just can’t move the way he needs to mechanically. ‘We’re getting as many eyes on it as we can,’ Aaron Boone said,” Yankees insider Bryan Hoch tweeted.

The Yankees are currently without three-fifths of their rotation, as Rodon, Luis Severino, and Frankie Montas are all out with injury.
Severino, recovering from a lat strain, should be back before the end of the month.
As for Rodon and Montas, the outlook is cloudy.
As long as the Yankees can identify what’s happening with the former White Sox and Giants pitcher, he could probably ramp up, but if they can’t, it’s difficult to see him in the Bronx anytime soon.
