It’s hard to play baseball when the wind is strong: anybody who has picked up a ball will tell you that.
MLB, however, has a tight schedule to stick to, and the Chicago White Sox and the Seattle Mariners had to endure some very strong winds during Thursday afternoon’s game.
The game, played at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, had some odd infield plays, particularly with flies, because of the wind.
Hey, they call it the “Windy City” for a reason.
Take a look for yourself.

It was the bottom of the fifth inning, with Mariners’ youngster Logan Gilbert on the mound.
Fortunately, there were already two outs on the scoreboard, so the damage inflicted wasn’t too costly: Adam Engel of the White Sox lifted a popup to the infield.
The Wind Cost The Mariners A Run In Thursday’s Game
Because of the wind, Mariners’ catcher Cal Raleigh (who later hit a home run that made it a two-run game, 3-1) couldn’t secure the ball and it landed on the grass.
The play was ruled an error, but again, it’s hard to successfully field a fly ball with so much wind.
To make matters worse, the ball landed between five Mariners fielders, and nobody could make the out.
Immediately after the play, Engel came around to score on a Jake Burger single to shortstop.
At the time of writing this article, the Mariners were in front 3-1 in the eighth inning.
Struggling outfielder Jarred Kelenic hit a much-needed two-run home run in the second inning to put the game 2-0.
The home team scored that run in the fifth, but still wasn’t able to produce much against Gilbert.
