The New England Patriots exhausted their quarterback depth chart when rookie Bailey Zappe played during their Week 4 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
He was the only active play-caller left on the roster after Brian Hoyer suffered a concussion in that game while Mac Jones had an ankle injury in their Week 3 game against the Baltimore Ravens.
The Patriots are desperate after losing two quarterbacks and falling to 1-3.
That’s why they are set to sign veteran quarterback Garrett Gilbert to their practice squad.
However, the Patriots hope to have Jones back as soon as possible because he gives them the best chance to win.
But NFL Network’s Mike Giardi shared that the former Alabama standout is still on the road to recovery despite some progress.
I'm told, per sources, that there remains a fair bit of instability in Mac's ankle. #Patriots QB at the start of practice. Still has a limp. Not getting up on his toes very much but moving considerably better than Friday, when he didn't really move at all. pic.twitter.com/ZjheK1raA7

Jones’ Status Still Up In The Air
It remains to be seen if Jones will be healthy enough to take the field against the Detroit Lions.
But the instability in his ankle is bad news, especially for his mobility.
While that injury will not put an abrupt end to his season, his status remains questionable, at least for Week 5.
Jones has 786 yards, two touchdowns, and five interceptions through three games this season.
He threw for 321 yards and three picks against the Ravens.
He is completing 66 percent of his passes and has one rushing touchdown.
In other news, Giardi added, “Additionally, no Brian Hoyer at start of today’s practice, which is more of a walkthru. Rookie WR Tyquan Thornton also in attendance. We’ll see if this means the clock has started on his return from that broken collarbone.”
