Tyler Herro wants to remain with the Miami Heat, but he isn’t going to let contract negotiations consume his thoughts.
Speaking to the Miami Herald, Herro talked about receiving an extension from the Heat.
He clearly wants one, but he said it’s not a “top priority” right now.
“It is important for me. I’ve been here six years. I feel like I’ve earned it. I’m not saying what I’ve earned, but I’ve earned something. I think I deserve it, and I want to be here ultimately. I’ve vocally said that,” Herro said. “But I do want to say that it’s not like a top priority and I’m not going to hinder this season on getting an extension or not. I’m not going to lose my joy. I ain’t going to lose my joy. I’m excited to play.”
That last comment was clearly a dig at his former teammate Jimmy Butler.
Last year, Butler claimed that he had lost his joy while playing for the Heat and didn’t think there was a way to get it back.
Of course, everyone remembers the drama that followed that statement.
Herro believes that he has earned an extension because of his hard work and loyalty to the team.
However, the Heat may not agree with him, or they might not be willing to give him the sort of payday he desires.
Right now, Herro is focused on healing from injury and surgery and preparing to get back with his team as soon as possible.
He isn’t going to commit too much energy to thoughts of a contract extension, even though he believes that he deserves one.
