Over the past decade or so, there’s been a lot of attention given by the NFL to protecting its star quarterbacks when it comes to safety, considering these players are the faces of the league who they want on the field at all times.
That said, many rules put in place have made it difficult to get hits on quarterbacks, which fans and defensive players haven’t been thrilled about over the years.
Occasionally, a defensive player makes a massive hit, even if the quarterback did everything to prevent it, like sliding.
In Week 13, that’s what happened with Jacksonville Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence, as he took a vicious hit while attempting to slide, resulting in a scary concussion that sent him to the locker room and resulted in a three-game suspension for Houston Texans safety Azeez Al-Shaair.
Quarterback-turned-broadcaster Tom Brady recently shared his thoughts on the play and took a stance that may be surprising to some.
“If we don’t want these hits to take place, we’ve got to penalize the offense and the defense rather than just penalize the defensive player for every single play that happens when there’s a hit on a quarterback,” Brady said on “The Herd.”

Although it is surprising that Brady stuck up for the defensive player in his take, the Super Bowl champion isn’t wrong in his assessment, as it does seem unfair.
It’ll be interesting to see if the NFL decides to make a change in this area after this season and how that might impact the game moving forward.
