New season, same old Detroit Tigers.
They have been one of MLB’s worst teams for quite some time.
Their last winning season came in 2016, and the last time they were in the postseason was in 2014.
Fans definitely don’t deserve that.
They haven’t won a World Series since 1984, although they went to a couple in 2006 and 2012.
The worst part of all is that there isn’t too much hope of improving soon because everything starts at the top.
Ownership is very much against going over the luxury tax threshold or just so much as significantly investing to improve the team.
Facts speak louder than words.
And when they finally made some big splashes in free agency, a couple of winters ago, it all went badly because they didn’t invest in the right players.
They gave $140 million to a plate discipline liability in Javier Baez, and also spent important resources on the inconsistent Eduardo Rodriguez.
Still, they probably won’t spend anytime soon because they surely feel those deals are conditioning their payroll.
“Reminder: There is no salary cap in MLB. Having this roster is entirely a choice. Frankly, if you can’t afford a $300 million payroll or don’t want to spend what it takes to be competitive, you shouldn’t own a team. Exhausting rebuilds are for pro sports with salary caps,” sports columnist and host Graham Couch tweeted.

Teams like the Tigers see the competitive balance tax (CBT) threshold as a hard cap and not as an opportunity to keep adding valuable pieces to a quality roster.
That’s the problem, and that’s why they probably won’t make the leap soon.
That and their inability to scout and develop young talent.
It’s sad, but they look doomed for 2023 and probably beyond.
