For months, fans and insiders have speculated about Jaire Alexander’s future with the Green Bay Packers.
He’s had several run-ins with the team, and the fact that he skipped his media availability after the season was over only raised more questions.
The star cornerback claimed that he had ‘nothing good to say’ after the end of the season, and he was non-committal about coming back.
Now, a report by Rob Demovsky of ESPN makes it seem like it’s a long shot to expect him to return to Lambeau Field next season:
“There are strong indications that Alexander’s time with the Packers will end without him playing another down. Multiple team sources have privately expressed their frustration with Alexander’s inability to stay healthy and/or play through injuries,” Demovsky said.
Alexander is one of the best players in his position, but he’s struggled to stay on the field for most of his career.
Alexander has made a grand total of 14 appearances over the past couple of years.
Despite practicing almost every day, he was placed on Injured Reserve to close out the season.
He didn’t play after November 17th and only made seven appearances.
Even so, he was still among the team’s leaders in interceptions (two) and pass breakups (seven), which speaks volumes about his talent and impact.
The former first-round selection still has two years left in his contract.
He was once made the highest-paid cornerback in the league, receiving a four-year contract extension worth a whopping $84 million.
Now, letting him go after June 1st would save the Packers more than $17 million in cap space, and his power struggles with the team and injury proneness make him a clear-cut candidate to be on his way out.
