Things keep going from bad to worse for the New York Yankees.
On Sunday, they fell to their hated rivals in the Boston Red Sox, losing by a final of 6-5 and suffering a three-game sweep.
They are now four games below the .500 mark and remain in last place in the American League East.
The Yankees are also now nine games back in the Wild Card race, having lost eight games in a row.
On Twitter, Buster Olney of ESPN listed playoff odds for each team in the American League, courtesy of FanGraphs, which shows that the Yankees now have a 0.9 percent chance of reaching October and have still yet to find rock bottom.
AL chances of making the playoffs, per Fangraphs:
Orioles 99%
Rays 97.3%
Twins 92.8%
Rangers 87.9%
Astros 85.3%
Blue Jays 61%
Mariners 53.4%
Red Sox 14.6%
Guardians 6.0%
Tigers 1.2%
Yankees 0.9%
Angels 0.6%
A's, White Sox, Royals 0.0%— Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) August 20, 2023
After winning 99 games a season ago, the Yankees were expected to be a clear contender this year.
For most of the season, they have been right in the mix for a postseason berth.
However, things have changed quite a bit, and not for the better.
New York’s season has taken a turn for the worst since the second half of the season began.
Things only got worse on Sunday when they were swept by their most hated rivals.
The Yankees now have a run differential of -27.
They have not missed the postseason since 2016, but are quickly trending back in that direction and may ultimately find themselves on the outside looking in by the end of the season.
Teams such as the Baltimore Orioles and Red Sox are trending upwards while the Yankees continue their drastic slide out of postseason contention with just over a month to go in the regular season.
