With the New York Yankees sweeping Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox, old ghosts have come back to haunt the latter.
A few weeks ago, the Yankees had the look of a last-place team and occupied that spot.
Now, they have tied the Red Sox there and Boston could very well finish last again, like they did in 2022 and 2020.
“The Red Sox are now tied with the Yankees for last place in the AL East. They are in danger of finishing last in the division 3 out of 4 years now. That’s only happened once with this franchise over the last 90 seasons,” Red Sox insider Steve Perrault tweeted.

It’s safe to say that after winning the 2018 World Series, the franchise has been, for the lack of a better word, inconsistent.
Sandwiched in between those last-place finishes in 2020 and 2022 was an AL Championship Series appearances in 2021.
Still, it’s the franchise’s fault because they have had the opportunity to retain homegrown stars such as Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts and have struck out.
Their farm system wasn’t really good until very recently, too.
Let’s just say that Boston isn’t a top-tier team, but they are also on the path to becoming relevant again.
Given the circumstances (potentially three last-place finishes in the last four years), the overall landscape is a disappointment, but a 73-72 team is far from a disaster.
It hasn’t happened this year, but at least the Red Sox have had several success stories with young players and prospects this year.
