The San Diego Padres have been one of baseball’s most disappointing teams this year.
After winning 89 games and earning a Wild Card berth, they made a run to the NLCS last October.
This year, even after adding Xander Bogaerts, Michael Wacha, Seth Lugo, and others as well as getting Fernando Tatis Jr. back, the team has essentially been a non-factor in the playoff race.
Heading into Wednesday’s game, the Padres hold a record of 60-67.
In fact, they own a very shocking mark this season.
On Twitter, Bob Nightengale pointed out just how poorly the Padres have performed and a troubling mark they own this year.
The #Padres, MLB's most underachieving team, have shown no sign of life this year when they get down in a game.
They have an MLB-low six comeback victories when trailing by 2 or more runs, winning just once when trailing by multiple runs after five innings, per @sdutKevinAcee— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) August 23, 2023
Nightengale criticized the Padres for not showing any signs of life after falling behind in games this year.
They also have not been able to come back and win games late.
Nightengale also notes that the Padres have just six come-from-behind wins when trailing by two or more runs.
They also have won just once in games where they have trailed by multiple runs after five innings.
This is certainly a concerning trend the Padres are following this year.
With the talent on their roster, one would expect this team to be a clear World Series contender.
Manny Machado, Juan Soto, Bogaerts, and Tatis are all in the same lineup.
However, the team has been unable to put it all together this year, not unlike the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals, who have also been major disappointments in the National League.
We’ll see if the Padres can pull themselves out of this mess.
