It is beyond a shadow of a doubt that the National League Central is one of, if not the worst division in all of Major League Baseball.
Only one team currently has a winning record.
That team is the Milwaukee Brewers.
And strangely, they have not played good baseball this month.
In fact, no team truly has.
The St. Louis Cardinals are 14-13 since May 1, yet at eight games below the .500 mark, they have still played better than the rest of the division this month.
On Twitter, Cardinals insider Brandon Kiley made a post showing all NL Central team records since the start of the month.
NL Central standings since May 1st:#STLCards 14-13
Reds 12-13
Brewers 10-15
Cubs 9-17
Pirates 6-18— Brandon Kiley (@BKSportsTalk) May 30, 2023
The Cardinals began the month with the worst record in the National League.
After seemingly finding their footing, they have stumbled again and have fallen back to the bottom of the NL.
Still, oddly enough, they have outplayed everybody else in the Central.
The Pittsburgh Pirates led the division to start the month, and St. Louis was 10 games back.
Pittsburgh now is in second place after a 6-18 start to the month.
The Cardinals also briefly overcame the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds, who have posted records of 9-17 and 12-13, respectively.
After Saturday’s win against the Cleveland Guardians, the Cards were just four games out of first and sat in third place in the division.
But even with their recent struggles, the NL Central title is still very much within reach, as they are only 5.5 games behind with just over four months to go in the season.
