The New York Mets, not unlike the St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres, have had a nightmare season.
Despite their busy offseason and aggressive spending, the Mets find themselves nine games below the .500 mark at 36-45.
They are now 17.5 games back of first place in the National League East, which is currently held by the Atlanta Braves.
New York has also lost seven of their last 10 games.
In fact, they are on pace for a rocky finish.
According to Jon Heyman, the Mets are currently on pace to finish with a record of 72-90, which would match their record from the 1992 season.
Heyman noted this trend on Twitter.
The Mets are on pace to finish 72-90, exactly the same record as the 1992 team, The Worst Team Money Could Buy

The Mets have a talented roster on paper.
Their starting rotation consists of Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, and Kodai Senga.
They also have a lineup which features Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, Brandon Nimmo, Mark Canha, and Starling Marte.
However, the results have not been good for this year’s Mets squad.
New York won 101 games last season and earned a Wild Card spot for their first postseason berth since 2016.
But 2023 has been a far cry from what they were able to accomplish in 2022.
Owner Steve Cohen spent aggressively over the winter, but it has not translated into on-field success for these Mets.
The Mets are also nine games back in the Wild Card race behind the San Francisco Giants.
They have already traded away Eduardo Escobar, but more pieces may be on the move unless the team turns things around and begins playing up to their potential.
