With each passing season, MLB franchises are becoming more aware of the fact that much of the team’s success will depend on what happens outside the diamond.
Game prep, scouting, talent evaluation, player development, understanding of analytics, coaching… what happens at the front office level and in the clubhouse/dugout matters almost as much as the action per se.
The Los Angeles Dodgers, of all MLB teams, understand this the most and always make sure to be one step ahead of everyone.
That’s why they are bringing in J.T. Watkins.
Who is he?
We will get to that in a minute.
“J.T. Watkins, suspended by MLB in 2020 for his involvement in video sign-stealing scandal, has left Red Sox to take position w/ the Dodgers. Watkins will help LA with its hitting game planning. His hiring came with strong recommendations from both J.D. Martinez and Mookie Betts,” Red Sox insider Sean McAdam tweeted.

An advance scouting assistant with the Sox, Watkins was an asset assisting the coaching staff.
The former minor league catcher helped prepare scouting reports, worked with the catchers, helped the hitting coaches, and had a role in recommending umpire challenges.
He used to be the Red Sox’s video replay coordinator when they were flagged for illegal use of technology to steal signs in 2018.
After being suspended for the 2020 season, Watkins returned as a pro scout for the Red Sox, who never fired him.
The West Point graduate helped overhaul the advance scouting department for Boston.
He will now help the Dodgers plan games with an emphasis on hitting.
