The Los Angeles Dodgers might have stumbled a bit in the first half, but they are showing why they are considered an elite organization in recent weeks.
Their dominant play has catapulted them to first place in the NL West division, with a comfy 10.5-game lead over the second-placed San Francisco Giants.
Of course, that will happen if you string together 11 straight wins.
According to Codify Baseball, it’s the third-longest streak this season.
Longest winning streaks this season:
Rays, 13 games
Reds, 12 games
Dodgers, 11 games <—– their last 11! 🔥
Giants, 10 games— Codify (@CodifyBaseball) August 18, 2023
The Tampa Bay Rays opened the year with 13 straight victories, and that’s the longest one.
Three more wins, and the Dodgers will have leapfrogged them.
Of course, it won’t be easy: LA would have to sweep a good Miami Marlins team over the weekend, including besting reigning 2022 NL Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara.
If there is a team in baseball capable of beating any pitcher, it’s the Dodgers.
Their offense is magnificent, and deep: they have Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, J.D. Martinez, Will Smith, Max Muncy, James Outman, David Peralta, and other talented hitters.
They also got Clayton Kershaw back from a shoulder injury and turned Lance Lynn back into an All-Star-caliber hurler after trading for him.
Everything the Dodgers touch, they turn it into gold.
It’s a bold way to put it, but it isn’t far from the truth: every year, they lose important contributors and find a way to replace them either internally or with cheap acquisitions from outside.
The Atlanta Braves are the best team in baseball, but the Dodgers will be just as dangerous in the postseason.
