Despite showing signs of life this week and winning three consecutive games for the first time all season, the St. Louis Cardinals continued to struggle on Wednesday night, as once again, a strong outing from their starting pitcher eluded them.
Jordan Montgomery got through five innings, but allowed six runs.
As a result, the Cardinals fell by a final score of 10-4 against the Chicago Cubs and remained at the bottom of the National League with a 13-25 record.
With their most recent turn through the rotation now complete, they achieved a new low.
Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch noted that no Cardinals starter made it through the sixth inning in the latest turn through the rotation.
#stlcards have gone a full turn of the rotation without a starter pitching six innings. Only once in their past 10 games has the starter gone at least six.

Montgomery has been St. Louis’ most consistent starter this season.
However, the rotation has continually proven to be their Achilles heel.
And if it continues to be this way for St. Louis, they may continue to slip in the standings and fall further out of contention.
An early trade could be had if the Cardinals are intent on fixing their pitching woes.
But the Cardinals’ current group of starters is simply not performing up to par, and the lack of activity by the front office in the starting pitching market this past offseason has come back to haunt them.
And things aren’t about to get any easier.
They’ll begin a series with the surging Boston Red Sox on Friday at Fenway Park, a place where the Cardinals have struggled immensely dating back to the 2004 World Series.
