The Houston Texans are coming off a surprising season that saw Offensive Rookie of the Year CJ Stroud lead the team to an AFC South crown and their first playoff win since 2019.
Now armed with $70 million in cap space, Houston is perfectly situated to keep building on this strong foundation it has established.
One immediate area of need is in the backfield, where Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 is reporting the team, and running back Devin Singletary have mutual interest in a reunion this offseason.
The Texans definitely want to bring back running back Devin “Motor” Singletary and the interest is mutual, per sources.
The Texans are expected to explore scenarios where they sign more than one running back, per sources, perhaps rather than spend money on just one free agent…— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) March 3, 2024
Singletary is fresh off a career-high 898 yards and four touchdowns in his first season with the Texans and continues to be one of the most reliable backs in the NFL, missing only one game in the past four years.
Dameon Pierce is currently the only other proven running back on the roster, so the position is an obvious priority for the Texans this offseason.
It’s also impossible to ignore the other name Wilson mentioned in this tweet, and that’s Saquon Barkley.
Given the well-documented tumultuous nature of the running back market over the past few years, it likely won’t take an outlandish sum of money to pry Barkley away from New York.
If Barkley has already circled the Texans as his top choice and is communicating with Stroud, expectations are going to be elevated immediately and winding up with Singletary as the lead back once again will feel like settling.
This is certainly a situation to monitor, as a Singletary reunion would be a welcome sight for the Texans, but it’s tough to not wonder about what Barkley would look like in this young and explosive offense.
