The Houston Texans continue to be patient in their search for a new head coach.
Yet being too patient could mean they miss out on their top candidate.
The team has most notably been connected to Josh McCown, which sent shockwaves throughout the NFL world.
That is even more true when considering one of the other finalists for the job in Houston.
ESPN’s Josina Anderson revealed the three finalists, which include McCown.
As of this am, I'm told the #Texans still have not made a final decision on their head coach, but Brian Flores is still considered a finalist–even after his filing of a class-action lawsuit in Manhattan federal court against the NFL–along with Jonathan Gannon & Josh McCown. 1/3

But the real story here is that Brian Flores remains a finalist for the job.
We also can’t leave Jonathan Gannon out of the discussion.
Yet Flores still being in the mix is huge considering he filed a class-action lawsuit against the NFL.
That means he could be an active head coach while actively suing the league.
Additionally I’m told that the #Texans spent the last 48hrs or so thoroughly vetting the staffing plans for each of their finalists to ascertain viability, availability & fit. The outcome of that review is very important to this process, as is alignment, per league source. 2/3

Hopefully, the Texans are keeping him as a finalist for the right reasons.
A Clear Favorite
Flores was fired in Miami after consecutive winning seasons while also apparently fighting with the owner on a regular basis.
Working with all that noise and finishing with winning records should have meant he was swooped up immediately in the head coaching search.
Now the Texans face a unique decision.
Former Dolphins head coach Brian Flores joined @GetUpESPN to discuss his decision to sue the NFL and three teams, alleging racism in hiring practices.

Flores is a finalist with success as an NFL head coach as recently as a month ago.
Then there is McCown, the polar opposite, who has never coached at the college or NFL level.
Gannon, meanwhile, was the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive coordinator in 2021.
Going with McCown over Flores may prove the lawsuit to be true after all.
The same would not be as true if they hire Gannon, but it would still be a shock to see Flores get passed over yet again given his qualifications.
