The Houston Texans made the shocking decision to hire Lovie Smith as head coach this offseason.
This came after firing David Culley following one season, only to keep his staff intact.
The entire process was a bizarre one to watch, especially considering fans were led to believe that Brian Flores and Josh McCown were two top finalists.
Yet neither became a favorite and Smith’s name was thrown into the discussion late in the process.
Texans GM Nick Caserio spoke with the media Tuesday and offered up a curious tale.
NFL insider Ari Meirov shared some comments that don’t add up.
#Texans GM Nick Caserio told reporters that the Brian Flores lawsuit didn't affect their head coaching process and they never had plans to hire Josh McCown.

Caserio claimed that Flores’ lawsuit against the NFL had nothing to do with his candidacy, and also that the team was never going to hire McCown.
Each of those points requires a deeper look.
Texans Operate In Their Own World
Saying Flores’ lawsuit did not change anything is hard to believe.
He went from being a top candidate this cycle to missing out on eight potential jobs around the NFL.
His New England connections with Caserio made him a great fit and he just got done leading the Miami Dolphins to consecutive winning seasons.
So none of this makes much sense, other than the obvious fact he is suing the NFL.
Then there is the point about McCown.
Why would he get multiple interviews if they were never going to hire him?
Reading the tealeaves is not difficult on this one. #Texans really like Josh McCown and probably want to him as HC.
It’s not happening because of the backlash it would get.
A person with zero NFL coaching experience getting a HC job is a slap in the face to everyone else.

That is not only offensive to McCown, but also lacks any logic.
Were they leading him on?
McCown is only drawing interest from the Texans and has been interviewed in consecutive hiring cycles.
Yet Caserio is now telling fans he was never an option even though he was a reported finalist.
The Texans operate in mysterious ways and this coaching search will not have fans feeling any better about the future outlook of the team.
