Malcolm Butler will go down as a New England Patriots legend, even if he didn’t get to retire on his own terms.
He just announced his retirement at an event in Houston this weekend, according to a report by KPRC (via Ari Meirov).
Butler last played for the Tennessee Titans in 2020, although he was signed by the Arizona Cardinals and Patriots in 2021 and 2022, and he tried out for the Atlanta Falcons in 2023.
Now, he’s ready to walk away from the game and call it a career.

Butler will always be remembered for his impact on two Super Bowls, especially the first one.
He intercepted Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson at the goal line as a rookie back in 2015 in one of the most controversial play-calls in NFL history.
Then, he was remembered for the fact that Bill Belichick decided to bench him during the Patriots’ Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Butler made it to the league as an undrafted free agent in 2014, spending four seasons with the Patriots.
He left the team after being benched in the Super Bowl, spending three years in Tennessee with the Titans.
He signed with the Cardinals before shockingly retiring before the start of the season, and his comeback attempt with the Patriots the following season was cut short by an injury, landing on IR.
Now, he claims that he’s walking away from the game while he’s still comfortable, adding that he’s quite satisfied with his career and how things turned out for him.
