Legendary and former NFL head coach Bill Belichick is now heading to the college ranks as the head coach at the University of North Carolina.
Most people in sports media and football thought Belichick would return to the NFL after this season, including ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith.
Smith appeared on ESPN’s First Take Thursday morning to discuss why Belichick shouldn’t have taken the North Carolina job.
“I’m not going to say it was not wise for him to take the job. I’m simply saying it’s beneath him, meaning that this man is the greatest ever,” Smith said.

Smith is coming at this from a different angle.
He believes that because Belichick is arguably the greatest head coach in the history of the NFL, he should not have to take a job at the college level.
Smith, like many, felt like the eight-time Super Bowl winner deserved to get another head coaching job at the NFL level.
For the foreseeable future, it appears as though he will be manning his post in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and coaching the Tar Heels over the next five seasons.
This will be his first coaching gig in college, as he coached in the NFL for the last half-century.
It will be interesting to see how the legend adjusts to life as a college football head coach, but kudos to the school for being able to hire him to lead the program into the near future.
