The Indianapolis Colts pulled out an overtime win against the Atlanta Hawks in Berlin in Week 10, leading to a big sigh of relief. The Colts now firmly hold the top spot in the AFC South.
Alec Pierce has received his fair share of attention from fans over the past three seasons, and he is gaining more responsibilities on the field. Stats show how the wide receiver is thriving in his new role.
“Pierce has long wanted the opportunity to diversify his game, and the Colts are finally affording him that chance. Last season, 41% of Pierce’s receptions came on ‘go’ routes. This season, that number is down to 27%. Why? Because Pierce is running a greater variety of routes, both short and intermediate, and he has gained the coaches’ trust to do so because he has noticeably sharpened his route running. While he’s always been regarded for his speed, now he’s displaying that he’s much more than a guy who runs by defenders,” Stephen Holder wrote.
Pierce caught four of his seven targets against Atlanta for 84 yards and one touchdown. He now has at least 69 receiving yards in each of the past four games.
For the second year in a row, Pierce is in line to lead the NFL in yards per reception. He is turning heads and solidifying a spot in the Colts’ long-term future.
There were rumors of Indianapolis possibly letting Pierce go, but he is showing that he is versatile and capable of much more than expected. There is a very good chance that the Colts decide to sign him to a long-term deal, especially if he keeps delivering and evolving on the field.
