The Indianapolis Colts hoped to be in a better position ahead of the regular-season finale.
They’re again left out of the playoffs, but they didn’t have a bad season.
Even so, some believe Shane Steichen could and should be on his way out.
When asked about that, the second-year head coach confirmed that he’s had some positive conversations with team owner Jim Irsay recently (via ProFootbalTalk):
“I’ll keep our conversations private. I do have really good conversations with him weekly,” Steichen said.
Recently, former Colts punter Pat McAfee had harsh comments about the organization and how the team is being run.
Some believe the players aren’t playing hard or focused, and watching Anthony Richardson literally quit a game due to exhaustion may have been the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Still, while the Colts didn’t close out the season on a high note, it’s not like Steichen has done a bad job in charge of the team.
He had the Colts in a position to win the divisional crown for most of last season despite having Gardner Minshew as his starting quarterback.
It’s all about winning football games, and there are valid reasons to question this team’s culture under coach Steichen.
Still, they’re not that far off, and it seems like they could be a perennial playoff team with improved quarterback play.
