It was looking like the Oklahoma City Thunder were about to experience their first loss of the postseason on Thursday night.
But then they did what they have all season long: they outplayed the Memphis Grizzlies on both ends of the court and eventually claimed a 114-108 victory.
After the game, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander spoke with ESPN about his team’s mindset when they were down by a huge margin.
“If they could build it, we could erase it. That’s how we see it. That’s what we did,” Gilgeous-Alexander said.
The Thunder were trailing by 29 points, which was a stunning accomplishment for the eight-seed Grizzlies.
When the third quarter kicked off, Thunder fans were bracing themselves for a loss, something they are mostly unfamiliar with.
And then the tide started to change, and the Thunder found their rhythm.
It must be noted that the Grizzlies were without Ja Morant, who was injured during the first half and didn’t return after a hard fall.
Morant’s status for Saturday’s Game 4 is now uncertain.
But it wasn’t just Morant’s absence that hurt the Grizzlies; they were outplayed on both ends of the court.
OKC’s defensive pressure was taken up a notch, and their shots began to fall.
Meanwhile, Memphis started to have shooting trouble, and the massive margin decreased until the Thunder took the lead.
Alex Caruso had some huge plays throughout the game, especially in the final moments.
That sealed the deal, and now the Thunder have a 3-0 lead in the series.
They made history with this comeback, and on Saturday, they might earn their ticket to the second round of the playoffs.
