The Week 5 matchup between the New York Jets and Denver Broncos should have an extra spice to it.
Before the start of the season, Broncos HC Sean Payton was ruthless in his criticism of Nathaniel Hackett, who had been in charge of the team before being fired and then hired as the Jets’ Offensive Coordinator.
Payton pretty much stated that Hackett’s tenure in charge of the organization was a disaster and stated that he would do everything differently.
So far, things haven’t fared much better for the Payton-led Broncos, as they allowed the second-most points in a single game in NFL history, and needed a late comeback vs. the winless Chicago Bears to get their first win of the season.
His comments didn’t age well, and when asked about them ahead of their showdown with the Jets, he pretty much stated that he’s moved on from that and that both teams should be focused on getting their second win of the season (via Mike Klis).
Sean Payton once more on the Hackett deal: “Yeah, listen, respectfully, I feel like I’ve addressed it. Robert (Saleh, Jets’ HC) did a great job talking about it. Here’s the thing, we’ve got two teams focused on getting their second win. That’s where our focus has been.” #9sports

There you go; if you wanted an apology, that’s just not going to happen.
Truth be told, Hackett’s stint in charge of the team was nothing short of a disaster, as the Broncos were by far the most disappointing team in the league.
But even if Russell Wilson has looked much better this season, the 2023 Broncos have been as sluggish — if not worse — than their predecessors.
Payton will have a lot on the line in this game, from another win in this tough season to the ultimate bragging rights over the guy he bashed so fiercely.
