The Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts have made some big moves in their coaching staffs ahead of next season.
And as it usually happens in the National Football League, it seems like they were both targeting some of the same guys.
According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, both teams were interested in hiring former QB-turned-analyst Dan Orlovsky to a ‘prominent offensive coaching role.’
However, Orlovsky eventually chose to stay with ESPN and continue to serve as one of its main analysts.
It’s not the first time and likely won’t be the last: Carolina and Indianapolis discussed prominent offensive coaching roles with ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky before he opted to remain at the network.

Schefter added that this isn’t the first time — and certainly won’t be the last — that Orlovsky draws interest from this sort of position, which doesn’t strike as much of a surprise.
While not the most prominent or renowned player back in the day, Orlovksy has made a name for himself for his pre, during, and post-game analysis, becoming one of the quickest-risers in the sports network.
Some may argue that he has no coaching experience, so he shouldn’t be entitled to that kind of opportunity, and it would be a fair assessment.
Nonetheless, we see former players becoming coaches all the time, and there’s a big difference between being a great player and a great analyst/tactician/coach.
Orvlosky spent years of film study and watching game action from inside, so chances are he knows a thing or two more than the rest of us, and it’s not unusual to see average players go on to become phenomenal coaches.
So, hopefully, he’ll get another chance to pursue a different career path whenever he’s ready.
