The Texas Rangers have been mediocre for a while.
Their last winning season came in 2016, and they finished at 68-94 in 2022.
In the last two offseasons, however, they have shown the willingness to invest in the roster and compete.
Players such as Corey Seager, Jon Gray, Marcus Semien, Jacob deGrom, Nate Eovaldi, and Andrew Heaney have joined between 2022 and 2023.
The also brought in Bruce Bochy as their manager for 2023 and, they hope, beyond.
Perhaps it’s still too early to call them true contenders, but you can’t say they aren’t off to a blistering start.
Three undefeated teams remain:
Rangers
Rays
Twins— Talkin’ Baseball (@TalkinBaseball_) April 3, 2023
The Rangers are, together with the Tampa Bay Rays and the Minnesota Twins, the only undefeated teams remaining in baseball after the first four days of competition.
The Rangers overcame a shaky start by their ace, deGrom, to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies on Opening Day on Thursday.
They took the other two games, too, and completed a sweep of the reigning National League champs.
Not too shabby, huh?
The Houston Astros, the Seattle Mariners, and even the Los Angeles Angels look better on paper, but there is no denying that the Rangers have the potential to “arrive” in 2023.
They can shatter all projections and put themselves in the mix for a postseason spot if several best-case scenarios present themselves.
Let’s not go that far, though: as a reminder, the Angels started 2022 with a 27-17 record only to fall apart in the second half.
The season is long, and it tests the quality and depth of rosters on an everyday basis.
Let’s see what the Rangers are made of when all is said and done.
Things are looking up now, though.
