The Las Vegas Raiders entered the season with high hopes and expectations.
Hiring Pete Carroll as their head coach and bringing in coordinator Chip Kelly and quarterback Geno Smith on offense were expected to make a big impact.
So far, that hasn’t been the case.
That’s why, with the NFL trade deadline approaching, Jakobi Meyers recently reiterated his desire to leave Las Vegas.
“Oh, for sure,” Meyers said. “But I’m a professional at the end of the day. I’m just trying to play good football. If I’m here, I’ll play good football. If I’m not here, I’ll go out there and play wherever I’m supposed to be.”
Meyers requested a trade before the start of the season.
He wants a contract extension, and with the Raiders seemingly dragging out those talks, there wasn’t much of an incentive to stay for much longer.
A return to the New England Patriots sounds like the most logical outcome for Meyers.
He’s familiar with coordinator Josh McDaniels’ offense, up to the point where he followed him to the Raiders when McDaniels was their head coach.
The Patriots have had some success with Stefon Diggs as their WR1, but they don’t seem to have a reliable option besides him and tight end Hunter Henry.
The Raiders have been one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL this season, and while there’s still time to turn things around, the trade deadline is on Nov. 4.
As such, they might have no choice but to move on from Meyers are look toward the future.
