After hiring veteran head coach Monty Williams, the Detroit Pistons were thought to be trending up and potentially on the verge of turning things around, as the team had brought in one of the best leaders on the sideline who could immediately change the culture of this team.
Unfortunately, it has remained a rocky road for the struggling franchise, as the team can’t seem to put it all together, even with Williams calling the shots for Detroit.
The 2023-24 NBA regular season was another brutal one for the Pistons as the team never really showed any sign of progress or promise, with Detroit ultimately finishing the campaign with a league-worst record of 14-68.
As if finishing the season with an NBA-worst 14 wins wasn’t bad enough for this young team, the Pistons couldn’t secure a first-round draft pick higher than No. 5 overall after unfavorable results in the NBA Draft Lottery.
Things haven’t gone the Pistons’ way lately, but the team is prepared to make one substantial move, according to RealGM, as Detroit is expected to offer Cade Cunningham a five-year contract extension worth $226 million, via Legion Hoops.

In 2021, the Pistons selected Cunningham with the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft and seemed to have brought in a player they could build around moving forward.
Unfortunately, Cunningham has had trouble staying on the floor for Detroit, as he missed all but 12 games in his second season with the team while missing 18 games in his rookie year and 20 games during the 2023-24 campaign.
Despite the missed games due to injury, Cunningham has seemingly gotten better and better every year, which has clearly won over the Pistons brass if he does get this extension.
