The Philadelphia 76ers’ rocky start to the 2024-25 NBA season reflects the glaring absence of their star duo.
Joel Embiid’s left knee issue has kept him off the court, while newcomer Paul George remains sidelined with a bone bruise suffered in the preseason.
George was injured on Oct. 14 and since then has been working his way back to make his debut with the team that signed him to a four-year, $212 million contract this offseason.
Though he won’t suit up against the Memphis Grizzlies, he emphasized that his return isn’t too far off.
“I think at this point, it’s more just cardio,” George said, via NBC Sports Philadelphia. “Just getting the conditioning ready to go, just so that when I do come back, I’m not subject to any injuries because I’m fatigued or tired. So it’s just getting the cardio up. I had a really good two days of finally being on court, practicing and running hard, being in live action. So, the knee up to this point feels really good.”

The timing of the setback has been particularly frustrating for George, who hoped to build early chemistry with his new teammates.
Watching from the sidelines as the Sixers struggle hasn’t been easy, especially considering he was brought in to boost their offensive firepower.
Despite the forced hiatus, George hasn’t been a passive observer.
He’s maintained active involvement with the team, contributing during practices and offering insights during games.
His recent return to full practice participation marks a significant milestone in his recovery, bringing him one step closer to his eagerly anticipated Sixers debut.
The early-season struggles underscore how vital George’s return could be as Philadelphia looks to find its rhythm and establish itself as a serious contender in the Eastern Conference.
