There was a time around the MLB trade deadline during which the Toronto Blue Jays feared that Bo Bichette’s season would be over due to a knee injury.
That wasn’t the case but the ailment did take him out for about a month: he was just activated over the weekend.
To shore up the middle infield, the Blue Jays traded for St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong.
DeJong has a history of hitting for power in his MLB career.
In fact, he hit 74 home runs over his first three seasons, between 2017 and 2019.
He hasn’t been the same since that year, but the Jays decided to pull the trigger on the deal anyway to make sure they had a warm body to play if Bichette’s absence was long.
Well, it’s fair to say DeJong failed miserably as a Blue Jay.
By virtue of hitting .068/.068/.068 in 44 plate appearances (with a horrible .136 OPS), the Jays designated him for assignment on Saturday and officially released him on Tuesday.
It didn’t take long for DeJong to find a new team, though.
“The #SFGiants have just signed shortstop Paul DeJong to a major-league contract. He joins the team Wednesday,” MLB insider Bob Nightengale tweeted.

It’s a major league team, too, meaning he is guaranteed a spot on the active roster.
Not only has DeJong found a new team: he is joining a postseason race.
The 65-60 Giants are currently the owners of the third and final Wild Card spot in the National League.
DeJong had 13 home runs and a .710 OPS with the Cardinals before landing in Toronto, so there is still some thump in his bat.
The Giants are willing to see if he can get his mojo back.
